Deployed, Part Deux…

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

I previously mentioned that one of my co-workers had heard that he might be deployed to Iraq.  He found out last Friday (yes, the 13th) that he was going.  And not only going, but being activated immediately.

Now, don't get me wrong...I wouldn't even think of doing the following if his job wasn't so critical and if he hadn't confirmed that he will be gone for a full year at the minimum.

Today, we posted his job to get it filled.  Hopefully, we'll have someone within the next month.  Hopefully.

Until then, I may be a ghost while I try to survive the work load.  We already had enough work for 4 people and there was only 2 of us.  Now it's just me.  Anybody interested in being an underpaid, overworked, well respected webmaster?

Internet Advertising

Up until this evening, I've largely ignored internet advertising in all it's forms.  I haven't blocked it, I haven't even thought about it because in most cases it was never intrusive nor bothersome.

This evening I made the choice to begin blocking ads.  I started by downloading the Adblock extension for firefox and then configuring it to block the IntelliTXT ads.  If you haven't seen these, they are the ads that randomly double-underline words and pop-up a window when you roll over that word.

300 - IMAX

It's been quite some time since I've seen a movie in IMAX format. I really need to strike it rich so that I can have one of those in my own home. I went to the 00:30 (12:30 AM) showing of 300 and was more than pleased. No previews, no ads, just the movie. At exactly 00:30 the theatre went dark and the movie started. Wall to wall sight and sound engulfed me.

I can't speak nearly as well of 300 as I did of Reign over me, but I can say that I enjoyed it. It provided a different perspective that, if nothing else, led me to explore the history behind the story. If only more history could be portrayed in this way.

Kicked…In the Head

I previously mentioned the joy of being able to feel that little monster as it reacts to being poked and prodded. A couple of nights ago, I placed my head on my wifes belly and began talking. It wasn't long before I was summarily kicked in the head...repeatedly. I can't say that I'll enjoy it in another 5 months but for now I can't complain.

Reign Over Me

The wife and kids decided to spend this weekend with her family so I have been left to my own vices this weekend. Adding to the fact that I've also got Friday (today) off work, that makes for a very quiet, long weekend that will allow me to both catch up on alot of stuff and wind down from other stuff.

As I sat doing absolutely nothing yesterday afternoon, I decided that I would go see a movie if I felt like it. It was 10 PM before I felt like it so I didn't have much to choose from and almost decided against going until I noticed that there was a late showing (10:50) of Reign Over Me and it had been one of those things that I wanted to see when I saw the original preview.

Wow. An emotional rollercoaster to say the least. Very good acting on the part of Adam Sandler in his portrayal of a man who lost everything as a result of September 11th. All in all, a very intense mental drama that was played very well.

I'm thinking that I'll go see 300 this evening. May even go for the IMAX version.

¿Hablas español?

Anyone here ever tried to build a multi-lingual website?

Me neither. But I began that process last week and I'm having to consider the ramifications of it this week. This particular site is already 90% database driven but adding in multi-lingual support is becoming a major challenge in trans-dimensional thinking. With more than 300 sections to the main site and over 100 sub-level departments and sections making this kind of change is huge.

In one instance, I've combined translation tables and translation arrays with language flags to determine if a page is available in another language and, depending on the language requested, return an entirely different site.

I'm also trying my hardest to remember those spanish classes I took back in high school...

Hola, me llamo es bingo. Tengo gusto de subir en cosas. ¿Puedo tener un plátano? Eek. Eek.
